Saraki Leads Peace Mission to Enugu as PDP Seeks to Quell Internal Tensions
In a strategic move to salvage unity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a high-powered delegation led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki visited Enugu on Friday for a closed-door meeting with Governor Peter Mbah.
The visit marks the beginning of a nationwide peace tour by the PDP Reconciliation and Strategy Committee, recently constituted by the PDP Governors’ Forum to address festering grievances within the party ahead of its crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and a likely national convention.
Alongside Saraki were two former governors — Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa and Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe — who are also members of the committee.
Speaking after the meeting, Saraki emphasized the urgency of restoring calm and trust among PDP stakeholders.
“Our mission is simple: to engage leaders across the country and ensure that the forthcoming NEC meeting and convention are devoid of rancour,” Saraki said. “We are starting with the South-East because of the region’s historical loyalty and importance to the PDP.”
He described Governor Mbah as a pivotal figure in the party’s Southeast bloc and praised his efforts in providing leadership at a critical time.
“We came not only to consult but also to commend Governor Mbah for his role in holding the party together in the South-East and for his performance in Enugu State, which reflects the values the PDP stands for,” he added.
The delegation’s visit comes amid discontent in the South-East PDP, which recently issued an ultimatum threatening to withdraw support from the party if the zone is not allocated the position of National Secretary.
Saraki acknowledged the challenges but expressed optimism that unity is achievable.
“Our dialogue here today was fruitful. We’ve received valuable suggestions and left with renewed hope. The road ahead may be tough, but with sincerity and cooperation, we’ll emerge stronger,” he stated.
The reconciliation tour will continue across other geopolitical zones as the party works to rebuild cohesion and prepare for its next phase of political activity.
