Wike Blows Hot: Alleges Betrayal in PDP, Withdraws from Peace Agreements
The lingering crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn, as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has officially withdrawn from all reconciliatory agreements previously reached with party stakeholders, citing serial betrayal and disregard for key resolutions.
In a statement personally signed by the former Rivers State governor and released on May 25, 2025, Wike accused some top party figures, especially Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, of consistently undermining efforts aimed at stabilizing the party.
“Since after the 2023 general elections, the PDP has been swinging dangerously from one crisis to another due to dishonesty and lack of trust among its key players,” Wike stated. He noted that several meetings, including those held by the G5 and an expanded group at the residence of former Senate President Bukola Saraki, were aimed at healing divisions within the party.
Wike revealed that during the Lagos meeting of the G5, he openly blamed Makinde for failing to honor agreements, accusing him of being the “chief architect” of the crisis. He added that despite agreeing to move forward after the meeting, the Oyo governor and others quickly backtracked on their commitments.
He further detailed an Abuja meeting involving Governors Makinde, Umaru Fintiri, Bala Mohammed, and former Senate President Saraki, where critical resolutions were reached—such as affirming Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the party, withdrawal of legal suits relating to Rivers State, and cancellation of moves to declare a state of emergency. A reconciliation committee led by Saraki was formed as part of the process.
However, Wike expressed disappointment that even before the committee commenced work, “the gentleman’s agreement was already being crudely violated.” He accused Makinde and Mbah of plotting to impose Ude Okoye as National Secretary against earlier resolutions and circumventing legal norms by pushing the Deputy National Secretary to act in Anyanwu’s place.
He cited the aborted North-Central zonal congress in Jos as a result of INEC’s refusal to attend due to improper authorization of the invitation letter—signed by the Deputy National Secretary instead of Senator Anyanwu. “This is undeniably distasteful, provocative, and annoying,” he said.
Wike maintained that he has remained loyal to the PDP since 1998, working tirelessly to keep the party afloat without making personal demands, despite supporting many of the current leaders in their electoral victories.
Concluding his statement, Wike declared his total withdrawal from all agreements previously reached, stating that the betrayal and continued breach of trust by party leaders have left him with no other option.
“I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained,” Wike affirmed.
