Tragedy in Benue: Over 100 Feared Dead in Saturday Attack By Fulani Herdsmen

A dark cloud fell over Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday, June 14, when suspected armed assailants attacked the town, resulting in the deaths of over 100 residents and leaving several others injured.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the attackers invaded the peaceful community in the early hours of the morning, unleashing widespread violence that led to the destruction of homes and displacement of hundreds of residents. The community, now in mourning, has been left shattered by the scale of the tragedy.

In a swift response, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr. Sam Ode, visited Yelwata to commiserate with victims, inspect the scene, and assess the humanitarian impact of the attack. He was received by the Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, Hon. Maurice Orwough, who led the delegation around the affected sites.

Deputy Governor Barr. Sam Ode said:

“This is a deeply painful and unacceptable tragedy. The people of Benue, especially in communities like Yelwata, have endured far too much. On behalf of His Excellency, the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, I extend our condolences to the bereaved families. The government is working with security agencies to ensure peace is restored and justice is served. We will also provide support and relief to the displaced.”

The Deputy Governor further assured the community that the state government is committed to long-term solutions that will guarantee safety and rebuild affected communities.

Also addressing the press, the Executive Chairman of Guma LGA, Hon. Maurice Orwough, expressed deep sorrow and called on the federal government to intervene decisively.

Hon. Maurice Orwough said:

“We have repeatedly raised alarms over the vulnerability of our people, especially those living in border communities. This attack is one too many. We appeal to the federal government and all relevant security agencies to act swiftly and decisively. Our people deserve to live in peace and dignity.”

Security personnel have since been deployed to the area to restore calm, while emergency response teams are working to provide medical care and temporary shelter to the displaced.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security operatives, and report any suspicious movements or individuals.
