Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ogalla Meets Governor Alia in Makurdi to Finalize Plans for Naval Operational Base
MAKURDI – April 29, 2025
The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, today paid a high-level working visit to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, at the Government House in Makurdi to finalize arrangements for the establishment of a Naval Operational Base in the state capital.
This significant development marks a strategic move in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to bolster national security, particularly in the country’s inland waterways and to enhance the presence of the Nigerian Navy in the North Central region.
During the meeting, Governor Alia commended the Nigerian Navy for its renewed interest in extending its operational reach to Benue State. He expressed strong support for the project, describing it as a “timely and welcome initiative” that will not only improve security in the state but also create employment opportunities and stimulate local economic growth.
“The establishment of a Naval Base in Makurdi is a game changer,” Governor Alia stated. “It will reinforce our commitment to peace, security, and development, especially in areas vulnerable to criminal activities along our riverine corridors.”
Vice Admiral Ogalla, in his remarks, reiterated the Navy’s readiness to commence operations once logistics and final approvals are concluded. He emphasized the importance of the base in supporting internal security operations, protecting critical infrastructure, and enhancing swift response to security threats in the region.
According to sources familiar with the discussions, the operational base will be located along the River Benue, with infrastructure and support facilities planned to accommodate personnel, surveillance units, and patrol boats.
Today’s visit follows months of planning and technical assessments by the Navy in collaboration with the Benue State Government and other security stakeholders.
More updates are expected as groundwork begins for the establishment of the base, which is anticipated to officially launch later in the year.
