FG Orders Probe Into Alleged Neglect of Accident Victims at FMC Abuja

The Federal Government has launched an investigation into a viral video that allegedly shows road accident victims being neglected at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jabi, Abuja.

The video, which circulated widely on social media over the weekend, shows injured victims—some in severe condition—reportedly left without attention outside the hospital’s emergency unit. According to a good Samaritan who transported the victims, medical personnel initially refused treatment, allegedly due to a shortage of gloves.

The footage further shows one critically injured person eventually receiving help into the emergency unit, while others with visible wounds were left to walk into the facility unaided.

Responding to public outcry, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident.

In a statement issued by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Obadiah Gana, FMC Abuja confirmed that an internal probe is already underway. Preliminary findings reportedly indicate that the emergency unit was stocked with necessary medical supplies at the time.

“Our initial findings show the emergency department had an adequate supply of gloves and other medical consumables. Equipment such as trolleys, resuscitation kits, and wheelchairs were also available,” the statement read.

The hospital said it was engaging staff and stakeholders as part of the fact-finding process and expressed regret over the incident.

“We apologize for any distress caused. We value feedback and remain committed to providing quality healthcare with compassion and empathy,” the hospital added.

FMC Abuja also highlighted its indigent fund, which supports financially vulnerable patients, and its reputation as a center for advanced medical procedures like kidney transplants, laser surgeries, and open-heart operations.

The hospital emphasized its dedication to improving service delivery and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of all patients.
