Kano State Government Has Removed 239 Ghost Workers From Its Payroll

The Kano State Government has effectively uncovered and eliminated 239 ghost workers from its payroll, with 1,334 still awaiting identification.

Commenting on the recent biometric data capture conducted by the government to clean up the payroll system, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Alhaji Umar Faruk Ibrahim, reported that measures are being taken to purify the system following the discovery of numerous ghost workers at local government levels.

Ibrahim, along with Suleiman Wali, the Special Adviser on Civil Service Matters, clarified that the objective of the government’s biometric capture and pay parade was to combat corruption in the civil service.

According to him, the exercise was a component of the government’s attempts to close any gaps that permitted payment of salaries to non-existent employees.

According to Umar Idris, the chairman of the Local Government Payroll Committee, their main responsibility is to carefully review and approve salary vouchers before processing payments.

According to him, the committee’s initiatives uncovered 239 ghost workers who were deceptively added to the payroll.

Kano State governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has ordered the removal of ghost workers from the payroll, in line with his commitment to eliminate avenues for corruption in salary disbursement.

According to Idris, the elimination of ghost workers from the payroll is projected to result in a monthly savings of N27 million for the state government. This recovered amount will then be directed towards the state government’s funds, enabling better distribution of resources.
